Diagnosing Developmental Disabilities

Because the identification of a developmental disability is so important and can be life-changing, Damar takes a comprehensive approach to evaluation and testing.

The Damar Approach

Damar’s comprehensive approach to testing starts with qualified professionals performing assessments that have proven over time to be effective in diagnosing developmental disabilities.

But that’s only the start. We also conduct a thorough developmental history review, digging into family, medical, social, psychiatric, behavioral, substance abuse, and trauma/adverse experiences. In doing so, we collect data from many sources, including family members, teachers, employers, medical and other service providers, and friends.

This research provides a well-rounded view of the person we’re testing, which helps lead us to an accurate diagnosis—and an accurate diagnosis is critical to developing the right treatment plan.

Professional Assessment. Professional Care.

At Damar, all diagnostic testing is conducted by qualified, licensed professionals—for example, licensed psychologists who specialize in autism, intellectual disability, behavioral disorders, and more. We know that an accurate diagnosis means more effective treatment.

Testing at Damar

In general, Damar conducts neurological, intellectual, academic, behavioral, personality, adaptive behavior, delinquency, and other assessments using research-based testing instruments that have appropriate validity and reliability. We are accredited applied behavior analysis (ABA) providers adept at diagnosing autism early and working to develop effective individual treatment programs.

What happens after a diagnosis?

To begin, we share test results directly with the person tested and their family or designated caregiver to ensure understanding, agreement, and engagement. We want you to be clear about the diagnosis—and what our professionals think are the right next steps. To that end, we’ll provide you with a detailed plan to address your unique needs.

Because every situation is different, Damar’s professionals will develop an individual treatment plan for each person we serve. Every plan we develop uses empirically validated approaches to treatment—some of which have been developed right here at Damar.
