Volunteer Opportunities for Individuals

One-on-One Volunteer

The Volunteer Program of Damar Services, Inc. is designed to promote opportunities for mutually beneficial interactions and involvement for our clients and community volunteers. The One-on-One volunteer establishes a unique relationship with a Damar client who has little or no other contact with family members.

Responsibilities

  • Visit either on or off-campus at least every other week
  • Place a call or send a card/letter every other week
  • Build a trust level with the resident prior to off-campus activities
  • Maintain consistent communication with the multi-disciplinary team (director/manager/direct care staff)
  • Gain approval for scheduled visits
  • Promote and maintain positive interaction with residents and staff
  • Abide by the procedures and policies designed for staff and volunteers
  • Complete verbal or written reports, including any suspected exploitation, abuse, or neglect of a resident
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Damar Services and its mission and goals

Special Events Volunteer

The Special Event volunteer will assist with special events hosted by Damar Services. This description covers a wide variety of jobs, all of which are short term and deal with one-time or annual events such as Wild West Day, Fair Day and holiday celebrations.

These volunteers can work on pre-event, day of event, or post event activities such as seminars, conferences, health fairs or manning an information table or booth.

Volunteer participation helps guarantee that events are a success.

Volunteer Office Assistant

These volunteers provide office support to various staff members by completing assigned tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain consistent communication with assigned staff member
  • Maintain organization throughout assigned project(s)
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Damar Services and its mission and goals
  • Perform general office work
  • Provide quality customer service

Special Olympics Unified Partner

Special Olympics Unified Partners will assist Damar Staff in inspiring participating clients to be active members of their teams. Volunteers will work side-by-side with the clients, helping them to be the best they can be in their particular Special Olympics sport Special Olympics Unified Partners serve as coaches, mentors and examples for all of our clients

Responsibilities

  • Attend a Special Olympics training created by Special Olympics of Indiana

Educational Surrogate Volunteer

The Volunteer Program of Damar Services, Inc. is designed to promote opportunities for mutually beneficial interactions and involvement for our clients and community volunteers. The educational surrogate represents the best educational interests of Damar clients who have little or no other contact with family members.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the Educational Surrogate in-service offered by the local school systems
  • Become aware of the educational capabilities of the assigned student
  • Attend or participate via phone in all educational conferences regarding your student.
  • Abide by the procedures and policies designed for staff and volunteers

Scrapbooking Club Volunteer

The Scrapbooking volunteer will assist clients in exploring their creative side by helping them create pages for their scrapbooks. The volunteer must arrive half an hour before the scheduled start time for the evening. Scrapbooking is held once a month for an hour.

These volunteers are not required to provide any materials. All materials are provided by Damar Services. The only thing needed is the volunteer’s time.

Volunteer participation helps guarantee that scrap booking is fun and enjoyable for all clients who attend this activity.

IN-AJSOP Assistant

The IN-AJSOP Volunteer is responsible for assisting with tasks related to the annual conference, scheduled trainings, and quarterly newsletter.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains consistent communication with Damar Best Program Director
  • Maintains organization throughout the assigned project(s)
  • Assist with bi-monthly newsletter Assist with organizing training applications and maintaining records for continuing education requirements
  • Assist with maintaining a membership data base
  • Assist with material preparation for trainings and annual conference
  • Communicate via e-mail and phone with representatives from other social service agencies across the state
  • Demonstrates a commitment to Damar Services and its mission and goals

Volunteer Seamstress

The volunteer Seamstress will assist on dress or suit fitting days or evenings in order to properly fit donated gowns and suits to the clients. The volunteer is asked to take the alterations to their home and make necessary adjustments.

Seamstress Volunteers give of their time during prom season. All alterations must be done 9 days prior to prom. Seamstress Volunteers may also assist with occasional sewing projects for clients during other times of the year.

This position does not require you to be a professional seamstress, just someone who loves to sew and make minimal repairs.

Volunteer Carpenter

Carpentry volunteers are expected to work with provided supplies to create small wooden cars for clients to use in the Damar 500 race. All cars must be completed by the end of April.

Volunteer(s) for this position give of their time from January until the end of April. All supplies for this position will be provided by the organization. The volunteer may attend the race as a spectator on race day.

The volunteer(s) is expected to follow all directives from the principal or other Damar representative appointed by the principal. This position is supervised by the principal of Damar Academy.

Laundry Volunteer

The laundry volunteer is expected to follow all directives from the head of housekeeping in order to ensure safety for all people working in the laundry. Laundry volunteers are expected to assist laundry staff with transportation, washing and folding laundry.

Recreation Volunteer

The recreation volunteer will assist the recreation staff in providing recreational activities both during and after school hours. This volunteer may work in the swimming pool, work out area, or gym facilities. Volunteers will work side-by-side with the clients, helping them to be the best they can be in the activity.

Volunteer Historian

The volunteer Historian will be involved in creating and maintaining the history of Damar Services. This volunteer will spend time researching the organization and creating a printable digital file of all records for use by the organization in marketing materials, presentations etc.

This position will involve some lifting and sorting of materials and records in an attic. All materials needed for this position will be provided by the organization.
