Saturday - March 01, 2008Damar Academy achieves state accreditationA new Indiana law giving disability service providers unprecedented access to state education resources has enabled Damar Academy to achieve full accreditation from the Indiana Department of Education (DOE).
“Every child deserves to learn and receive a quality education, and this accreditation is a positive step towards our efforts to revitalize Damar Academy and inspire success for our students,” said Greg Johnson, Damar president & CEO. Last June, Damar began leading efforts to affect the state’s recent legislative change enabling Damar and other disability service providers to be recognized by the DOE. Among other benefits, Damar Academy can now access professional development grants for teachers and issue high school credits and state diplomas — both of which will help the school attract more qualified teachers and serve students required to attend a state-accredited school. About Damar Academy Established in 1994, Damar Academy has grown more than 1,000 percent and now serves 165 students in grades K-12. Academy’s staff also oversees academic services for 25 students attending Avon, Decatur, Mooresville and Plainfield schools. Sixteen certified teachers and six classroom assistants deliver a comprehensive, student-focused curriculum that includes physical education and fine arts. |
