It's a 3-peat sweep for Randy.

February 16, 2009

Randy Hurt, a 16-year-old resident at Damar Services’ Westside campus, won three gold medals in the Special Olympics World Championships last week in Boise, Idaho. A speed skater who volunteers with the Indianapolis Ice, Randy won gold in 500-meter, 777-meter and 1,000-meter races.

The new world champion and his Damar staff chaperone, Sean Oatis, returned to Indy on Feb. 15 and were welcomed home at Indianapolis International Airport by a group of Damar staff and hockey players from the Indianapolis Ice of which Randy serves as a volunteer team manager.

Randy won two gold medals in speed skating during the Indiana Special Olympic Winter Games in February 2008, earning him an opportunity to participate in last week's Olympic races. He competed against athletes from countries including Japan, Germany, Korea, Russia, China and Hungary.

"It was great," Randy said. "Training was a piece of cake. I was a little nervous during the races, but everything worked and I met a lot of new friends."
