World champion speed skater to be welcomed home by Ice players, Damar staff

A three-time world champion returns to Indianapolis in triumph Sunday evening.

Randy Hurt, a 16-year-old resident at Damar Services’ Westside campus, won three gold medals in the Special Olympics World Championships this week in Boise, Idaho. A speed skater who volunteers with the Indianapolis Ice, Randy won gold in 500-meter, 777-meter and 1,000-meter races.

Hurt and his Damar chaperone, Sean Oatis, return to Indy on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 6:18 p.m. on Delta flight 3166 from Detroit. Hockey players from the Indianapolis Ice, as well as Damar staff will be at the airport to welcome home the new world champion.

Hurt is an African-American teen who would be a great interview, as would Pete Koers, the one-on-one volunteer who helped the young hockey fan connect with the Indianapolis Ice and got him interested in speed skating. In his races this week in Idaho, Hurt competed against athletes from countries including Japan, Germany, Korea, Russia, China and Hungary.
