Registration is now open for Damar's 2010 Autism Family Training Series presented by autism specialist
Kristin Harmon, clinical supervisor of Autism Services at Damar. The series includes seven monthly workshops beginning Saturday, February 13 that explore various relevant topics related to autism spectrum disorders and is sponsored by Autism Advocates of Indiana.
When: One Saturday each month from February 13 - August 14, 2010.

Introduction to Behavior Supports

Get basic information about autism spectrum disorders, including facts vs. myths, what the latest research reveals and best practices related to children with autism. Explore the functions of behavior (“Why is my child doing these things?”) and how to conduct Functional Behavior Assessments. Learn how to identify appropriate reinforcers for your child and how to use them to promote positive behaviors.

Find out everything you need to know about prompting, fading and shaping and how to use these tools to encourage independent behavior in your child. Discover the most effective ways to conduct a task analysis and how to simplify tasks for your child through the forward and backward chain modeling.

Alternative Communication

Learn how to identify the best times to introduce new communication techniques to your child and how to teach a variety of alternative communication skills, including sign language, picture exchange communication and augmentative alternative communication devices. Create visual schedules and social stories that are appropriate for your child and discover how these tools can help you encourage your child to effectively communicate his/her specific wants and needs.
