Living with Autism

Living with a child or an adult dependent who has been diagnosed with autism can be a highly stressful experience. Too often parents are plagued with guilt or anxiety that the autism diagnosis has resulted from them either being poor parents or not having "done enough." Others responsible for care-giving may experience emotions related to denial —- "This can’t be happening to my child!"

The complexity of achieving a proper diagnosis can also lead to increased stress. Because of the individual unique nature of autism—everyone is different—sometimes additional evaluation and review is required before a full diagnosis and understanding can be achieved.

Issues faced in living with autism may include:

  • Family stress
  • Sibling stress
  • Safety in the home
  • Traveling
  • Misperceptions of educators and society
  • Dealing with myths associated with autism
  • Financial issues

Competent counsel and advice to reduce and positively manage stress is available from qualified professionals. Don’t be anxious about seeking aid for extended issues for living with autism. Additional information is available in our Online Resources section.
